Night Pup

Whenever I hear other animals getting credit for certain things instead of dogs, it really annoys me and makes me growl.  The latest one that is getting on my nerves is the term "night owl" which I hear people tossing around all the time to refer to those who stay up late at night.

However, the term does not really make a lot of sense to use because all owls are nocturnal.  It is kind of like calling someone a "night bat" - which also would not make a lot of sense, because all bats are nocturnal.  No, if you are trying to differentiate creatures based on sleeping patterns that are not quite in line with others of the same type, then there is really only one term that you should be using.  That is right, I am talking about the term "night pup."

Most dogs sleep at night, but a night pup is different because he barks all night long and sleeps during the day.  I mean, if you live near someone who keeps their dog (or dogs) outside, then you likely have heard a night pup barking and patrolling, keeping the neighborhood safe at night.  No one can sneak up on a night pup in the middle of the night, because a night pup is always up sniffing and peering around, alert for danger.

Hopefully, humans will stop calling those who stay up late "night owls" and start using the phrase "night pups", giving these unique dogs some credit for their nocturnal behavior that is so different than what most dogs do.  Otherwise, you might as well start using the term "underwater fish" to refer to someone who is swimming, or "flying bird" to talk about someone who can jump high - the term night owl just does not make a lot of sense.  Take it from a stuffed dog with a blog - I know these things!
