There is an old saying out there about "barks being worse than bites", which basically alludes to the fact that some people talk a big game, but really do not back up that talk with action. In essence, this was meant to tell people not to be afraid of big talkers or scary meanies.
I have always been one of those who just barks without thinking. I see the mail being delivered, and I bark. I see another dog, I bark. If the vacuum is brought out, I bark, and then quickly run away. Sometimes, even when I am sending emails or posting on my blog, I "bark" without thinking about the impact of what I am saying.
However, I have been thinking a lot recently, and I have decided that a bark might actually be worse than a bit, especially in today's world. Now, a bite hurts for a bit then heals, at worst leaving a slight scar. Words, especially once sent out across the web, can easily travel the length of the world, and will last forever.
There is no taking back an email sent in anger, nor can you truly retract a blog post made in the heat of the moment. The term "viral" denotes how fast these type of things can move, and how quickly they can spread.
This puppy is fully aware of the lesson to be learned here, and suggests that the phrase be changed, "A bark is always worse than a bite, and lasts much, much longer." Be careful what you bark or howl out to the world, because you never know when it will come back to bite you!
